What's New...
Hi, everybody! We are continuing to see fantastic results with our Zoom whitening system. It seems everyone is interested in whitening their smile. We use the same system that is used on ABC TV?s Extreme Makeover show. The results are very gratifying. Ask us about it if you are interested!... Dr. MacKnight just took a trip to Germany , touring the Rhine river and visiting all sorts of medieval castles and towns! Very picturesque! Hope you all have a great summer with great weather!

ORAL CANCER PREVENTION

Oral cancer rates are rising. The typical people at risk are over age 40, with a history of smoking and/or drinking alcohol. However, recently there is an increase in oral cancer occurring in much younger ages with no history of alcohol or tobacco. Oral squamous cell cancer accounts for 90% of all oral cancer. Besides alcohol and tobacco products, other risk factors are poor oral hygiene, chronic trauma, and zinc deficiency. It is estimated that 10% of Americans have a diet deficient in zinc. Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University found a zinc deficiency causes the tongue and esophagus to be more susceptible to cancer causing foods and chemicals, increasing the risk of cancer in those areas. The key to survival is early detection. Detected early, most oral cancers have a higher than average survival rate. However, since many people do not seek professional care until later stages, most oral cancers have less than 50% survival rate beyond five years. We feel that oral cancer screening is so important, that we do oral cancer exams at each cleaning and check-up appointment. So if you are past due for a check-up, don't delay! call today!

SWEET TOOTH!

A little boy was taken to the dental office forhis check-up, where it was discovered that he had a cavity that needed to be filled.

Now, young man?, asked the dentist, what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?

Oh, chocolate, please, replied the youngster.

A NEW DENTAL CONDITION: "METH MOUTH"

There are reports of a new dentalcondition as a result of methamphetamine abuse, especiallyamong prison inmates. It is called "Meth Mouth". Symptoms include gum disease, rampant tooth decay, and broken and cracked teeth. Some possible causes could include poor oral hygiene, increased craving of sugar, and dry mouth. Cracked teeth are a result of teeth grinding due to tension in jaw muscles which is common among meth users. Minnesota's prison systems dental care costs have doubled since 2000 as a result.
