BOTTLED WATER FACTS!
Bottled water has become the second most popular drink in the U.S. In the year 2000, Americans consumed more than 5 billion gallons of bottled water. Who would have thought 10 years ago that we would pay $2 -$3 for a 12 ounce bottle of regular un-flavored, un-carbonated water! However, you need to be aware that most brands of bottled water do not contain optimal levels of fluoride. Some brands have no fluoride at all. And the laws governing the bottled water industry do not adequately guarantee the quality or purity or regulate the source of the water. In some cases, municipal tap water at the bottling plant site is used. Some "natural" spring water has been known to contain high levels of bacteria and other microorganisms. Distilled water or water treated by reverse osmosis removes all of the fluoride. Therefore, you need to monitor the amount of fluoridated water your family is really getting. Fluoride toothpaste alone is not enough fluoride protection. Health experts recommend on average 8-10 cups of water per day. If most of your water intake is bottled, non-fluoridated water, you may need to change your habits or take a fluoride supplement. Check with us or your medical doctor, especially if you have cistern water or well water. (continued on reverse side)
Water should contain 0.7 - 1.2 ppm fluoride (1ppm = 1mg/liter). Read the bottle label or call the manufacturer to check the correct level. Don't overlook your home water treatment system. Many of them remove the fluoride along with the other minerals.
SWEET NEWS
According to a report in the Academy of General Dentistry Journal, Nutrasweet (aspertame) won't cause seizures, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or some of the other health problems that have been erroneously reported over the years. These myths have been propagated on the internet without any reputable documentation. The FDA and American Dietetic Association backs up the research to help clear NutraSweet's name.
However, this does not mean you can drink diet soda without health problems. The acid in diet soda can cause high decay rates and the caffeine and phosphorus contained in these drinks can cause other problems including osteoporosis.
