Bottled Water and Tooth Decay A recent report by the Australian Dental Association has found that a lack of fluoride in most bottled water products is a major contributing factor to tooth decay in children. The study found that permanent tooth decay in 14 to 15 year olds increased by 71% from 1996 until 2002. The increase in decay coincided with the rising popularity of bottled water and sports drinks. The researchers also found that young men on work sites often consumed up to 3 liters of soft drinks per day. This essentially reversed the gains in dental health in the early 1970's when Australia first started fluoridating their drinking water. This underscores the importance of fluoride in fighting tooth decay and the harm these soft drinks, sports drinks and non-fluoridated bottled water can cause.

SAVE THOSE BABY TEETH? Baby teeth may one day be an important source of stem cells to treat severe illness and injuries. BioEDEN, Inc. is providing primary (baby) tooth preservation services in which they will freeze the teeth for future use. But don't get excited yet. The research has not yet caught up to this level where it would be possible to thaw the frozen cells and use them to grow new cells. But it could be promising because the cells in baby teeth are undifferentiated which is the type used in stem cell procedures.
